this is why you get fancy chickens

Here is the comparison between a Wyandotte egg and a Marans egg:
Toupee is a nasty old bag of bones, and her eggs are only about half as dark as when we bought her, but they used to be a deep reddish brown, like milk chocolate.

They don't taste like chocolate, and does it really matter what they look like? Probably not, but I like to spend my money on stupid stuff.

My in-laws' chickens lay green eggs.

My green egg layer has gotten lazy, and the other one got eaten by the skunk. That's why we bought four more. I love those crazy things!

I've always wanted Marans. Have you checked out feathersite? If you look at the Maran listing it gives links to the other dark egg layers. Since I'm not home I'm not sure of the links but I think that there a darkeggs.com or something like it too.
